Nasal Endoscopy

What Is a Nasal Endoscopy

A nasal endoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that allows an ear nose and throat specialist to closely examine the inside of the nose and sinus passages. It uses a thin, flexible tube with a light and camera on the end, called an endoscope, to provide clear views of areas that cannot be seen during a standard nasal exam.

Nasal endoscopy helps identify the cause of ongoing nasal or sinus symptoms and plays an important role in diagnosing a wide range of ear nose and throat conditions.

At ENT Specialists of Alberta, nasal endoscopy is performed safely and comfortably for patients across Alberta as part of a thorough evaluation.

Why a Nasal Endoscopy Is Performed

Your doctor may recommend a nasal endoscopy if you are experiencing persistent or unexplained symptoms, including:

  • Chronic nasal congestion or blockage
  • Frequent sinus infections
  • Ongoing post nasal drip
  • Facial pain or pressure
  • Nosebleeds
  • Loss or reduced sense of smell
  • Suspected nasal polyps or structural abnormalities
  • Evaluation of a deviated septum
  • Monitoring sinus or nasal conditions after surgery

This procedure allows your specialist to make a more accurate diagnosis and develop an effective treatment plan.

What Happens During a Nasal Endoscopy

A nasal endoscopy is typically performed in the clinic and takes only a few minutes. Before the procedure, a numbing spray may be applied inside the nose to reduce discomfort and open the nasal passages.

The endoscope is then gently inserted into the nostril. As it moves through the nasal cavity and sinus openings, your doctor can examine the lining of the nose, the septum, turbinates, sinus drainage pathways, and the back of the nasal passages. The images are displayed on a screen, allowing precise evaluation.

Most patients describe the procedure as mildly uncomfortable but not painful.

What Can a Nasal Endoscopy Diagnose

Nasal endoscopy can help diagnose or evaluate conditions such as:

  • Chronic sinusitis
  • Nasal polyps
  • Deviated nasal septum
  • Enlarged turbinates
  • Sinus drainage blockages
  • Inflammation due to allergies or infection
  • Sources of recurrent nosebleeds
  • Tumors or abnormal growths

In some cases, small tissue samples may be taken during the procedure for further testing.

Recovery and Aftercare

There is little to no recovery time after a nasal endoscopy. Most patients can return to normal activities immediately following the appointment. Mild nasal irritation or congestion may occur briefly but usually resolves quickly.

Your doctor will discuss the findings with you and explain next steps, which may include medication, further imaging, or additional treatment.

Is a Nasal Endoscopy Safe

Nasal endoscopy is a safe and commonly performed procedure. Complications are rare, and the benefits of accurate diagnosis and targeted treatment far outweigh the risks.
