Nosebleeds

What Is a Nosebleed

A nosebleed, also known as epistaxis, is a very common condition and is usually harmless. Nosebleeds occur more frequently in young children and in adults over the age of sixty five. Most people will experience at least one nosebleed during their lifetime, and only a small percentage require medical attention.

Because the nose contains many delicate blood vessels close to the surface, nosebleeds are one of the most common ear nose and throat concerns seen in medical clinics and emergency departments.

At ENT Specialists of Alberta, our physicians regularly assess and treat nosebleeds for patients across Alberta, helping identify underlying causes and prevent recurrence.

What Causes Nosebleeds

The nose is especially prone to bleeding due to its rich blood supply. The area most likely to bleed is the front part of the nasal septum, which is the wall that separates the nostrils. This region is exposed to dry air, temperature changes, and minor trauma, making it more vulnerable to bleeding.

The lining of the nose in this area is thin and delicate, which further increases the risk of a nosebleed.

Common causes of nosebleeds include:

• Dry air and low humidity
• Nose picking
• Excessive or forceful nose blowing
• Trauma to the nose
• A deviated nasal septum
• Chronic use of nasal oxygen tubing
• Allergies, including seasonal allergies
• Chronic sinus inflammation
• Alcohol use
• Blood vessel abnormalities
• Conditions that affect blood clotting
• Medications such as anti inflammatory drugs, blood thinners, and nasal steroid sprays
• Recreational drug use

Certain medical conditions may also increase the risk of frequent nosebleeds. These include high blood pressure, blood disorders, nasal polyps, and chronic sinus disease. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can also make some individuals more prone to nosebleeds.

If you experience frequent, heavy, or unexplained nosebleeds, an evaluation by an ear nose and throat specialist is recommended.

At ENT Specialists of Alberta, we provide comprehensive assessment and treatment for nosebleeds to help patients throughout Alberta manage symptoms safely and effectively.

First Aid for Nosebleeds

Most nosebleeds are not serious and can be safely managed at home. However, if a nosebleed is accompanied by other concerning symptoms such as pain, confusion, or neurological changes, it is important to seek medical care promptly.

How to Stop a Nosebleed

To manage a nosebleed safely and effectively:

  • Sit upright and lean your head slightly forward. Lying back can cause blood to flow into the throat and stomach, leading to nausea or irritation.
  • Gently but firmly pinch the soft part of your nose just below the nasal bones. Hold steady pressure for ten to fifteen minutes without checking to see if the bleeding has stopped.
  • Breathe through your mouth while applying pressure.
  • Applying a cold compress or ice pack to the forehead or back of the neck may help constrict blood vessels and reduce bleeding.

Once the bleeding has stopped, avoid rubbing, picking, or blowing your nose for several hours, as this can cause the bleeding to restart.

When to Seek Medical Care

You should seek emergency or urgent medical attention if a nosebleed:

  • Occurs after a significant injury, such as a vehicle accident or facial trauma
  • Results in heavy or ongoing blood loss
  • Makes breathing difficult
  • Continues for longer than thirty minutes despite proper first aid
  • Occurs in a child younger than two years of age
