Deviated Septum

What Is a Deviated Nasal Septum

Many people are surprised to learn that a large portion of the population has some degree of a deviated nasal septum. This condition can be present from birth or develop later in life due to injury or trauma.

A deviated nasal septum occurs when the thin wall of bone and cartilage that separates the left and right nasal passages is shifted to one side. This wall is called the nasal septum. When it is displaced, one nasal passage may become smaller or more restricted than the other. Some individuals have no noticeable symptoms and may not require treatment. Others experience ongoing discomfort or breathing difficulties that affect daily life.

In more severe cases, a deviated nasal septum can significantly reduce airflow through one side of the nose. This can make breathing through the nose difficult and may contribute to snoring or sleep apnea. It can also lead to related concerns such as dry mouth, bad breath, or dental issues due to chronic mouth breathing.

At ENT Specialists of Alberta, our team provides expert evaluation for patients across Alberta experiencing nasal breathing concerns related to a deviated septum.

Symptoms of a Deviated Nasal Septum

Symptoms can vary depending on the severity of the deviation and may include:

  • Difficulty breathing through one or both nostrils
  • Frequent sinus infections
  • Ongoing congestion that is worse on one side of the nose
  • Chronic post nasal drip that may lead to throat irritation or ear pressure
  • Nosebleeds
  • Facial pressure or pain
  • Headaches
  • Sleep disturbances such as snoring, loud breathing during sleep, or sleep apnea

Causes of a Deviated Nasal Septum

A deviated nasal septum can develop for several reasons, including genetic factors or physical injury.

  • Genetics
Some individuals are born with a deviated septum. This can occur during fetal development or as a result of pressure during childbirth.
  • Injury or trauma
A deviated septum can also result from injury to the nose. This may occur during contact sports, accidental impacts, rough play in childhood, or vehicle accidents in adulthood.

At ENT Specialists of Alberta, we work closely with patients throughout Alberta to identify the cause of nasal obstruction and develop personalized treatment plans to improve breathing and overall quality of life.

Deviated Septum Treatment With Nasal Septum Surgery

If you are experiencing symptoms related to a deviated nasal septum, scheduling an evaluation with an ear nose and throat specialist is an important first step. A thorough assessment allows your doctor to determine the cause of your symptoms and recommend the most appropriate treatment.

For some patients, symptoms related to a deviated septum can be managed without surgery. Medications may be recommended to help reduce congestion, inflammation, or nasal obstruction and improve breathing. If these treatments do not provide sufficient relief, surgical options may be considered.

One common surgical treatment is septoplasty, a procedure that straightens the nasal septum to improve airflow through the nose. In some cases, turbinate reduction may also be performed to further reduce nasal blockage and enhance breathing. These procedures are typically done on an outpatient basis, and most patients are able to return to normal daily activities within a short period of time.
